I would like to highlight the profound impact that festivals such as the Bushfire Festival and our cultural festivals have in fostering international cooperation and cultural exchange. The MTN Bushfire Festival has matured into a dynamic platform that not only showcases the rich traditions and artistic talents of Eswatini but also attracts tourists from around the globe. This influx of visitors creates opportunities for economic partnerships and collaboration, enriching not just our economy but our cultural landscape as well.
My own connection to the festival predates my time in government. Around 2011, when I served as Head of Corporate Services at MTN Eswatini, robust internal debates took place over whether the company should become the title sponsor of the Bushfire Festival. The marketing team was drawn to the opportunity for brand visibility, sales, and brand affinity. At Corporate Services, our focus was on the value Bushfire presented for stakeholder hosting and for rehabilitating the company’s image, which was under considerable criticism at the time as a monopoly in the sector. Despite the different angles each team brought to the table, there was a shared confidence in Bushfire as an asset worthy of bearing the company’s name, a confidence grounded in the strong track record that Malandela had already built in hosting events. In my capacity overseeing the company’s legal affairs, I had the privilege of drafting the sponsorship agreement that became the foundation of what is now an extraordinary legacy. MTN became the official title sponsor of the Bushfire Festival in 2012. The MTN Bushfire Festival will be celebrating 20 years in 2027.
Recently, His Majesty the King inaugurated the Ezulwini Palazzo International Convention Centre (ICC), a significant milestone for our country that will enhance our capacity to host large-scale events. Just three weeks ago, we welcomed participants from Africa and Europe for the inaugural international conference of the OACPS-EU Parliamentary Assembly. This gathering underscored our commitment to diplomatic engagement and collaboration.
During my interactions with the delegates, it was striking to find that several of them, or their family members, had previously attended the Bushfire Festival. Notably, some expressed a keen interest in aligning future conferences or similar events with the Bushfire Festival or other cultural festivals. This feedback illustrates the global interest in and appreciation for our cultural and musical heritage. It highlights how our festivals can serve as a bridge, connecting diverse cultures and promoting understanding.

To ensure the continued success and growth of private sector festivals like the MTN Bushfire Festival, it is crucial to strengthen collaboration among event organizers, government entities, and the private sector. While the organizers have done commendable work in providing a remarkable experience for visitors, our collective goal must be to facilitate further growth. As government we can support these initiatives by allocating resources aimed specifically at enhancing festival infrastructure, addressing logistical needs, and backing promotional campaigns that effectively showcase these unique events to both local and international audiences.
The Prime Minister’s challenge to double the revenue generated from the Bushfire Festival is an ambitious yet attainable goal. As an advocate for the creative industry, I recognize the multitude of sectors that benefit from events like Bushfire, from hospitality and tourism to arts and crafts. It is essential for all stakeholders to appreciate the interconnectedness within our creative economy, where the success of one area can dynamically influence others.

Moving forward, fostering continuous dialogue and cooperation among the government, festival organizers, and private sector stakeholders will be vital. This collaborative approach will enable us to adapt to the evolving landscape of large-scale events, ensuring that we remain responsive to challenges and opportunities. By working together, we can guarantee that the Bushfire Festival and similar events not only thrive but also significantly enhance our country’s cultural vitality and economic prosperity while nurturing international relationships.
Moreover, the suggestion from international delegates to align conferences with our festivals presents an exciting opportunity for synergy. We can explore the prospect of designing cultural programmes and festivals that coincide with significant international conferences, creating a vibrant calendar of activities that appeals to both business and tourism. Such initiatives would not only attract more attendees but also offer sponsors and partners heightened visibility and engagement.
In conclusion, by strategically aligning our efforts with the immense potential of events like the Bushfire Festival, and by leveraging the capabilities of our new convention centre, we have the opportunity to establish a sustainable framework that benefits all stakeholders involved. This approach not only enhances our local economy but also highlights the vibrant spirit and rich culture of Eswatini to a global audience.
The positive feedback from international delegates further reinforces the importance of our festivals as conduits for global connection and understanding. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs looks forward to collaborating with various stakeholders to promote our international relations through the organisation of events and conferences here at home.
